Unmasking the truth?

Unmasking the truth?

Disclaimer:  I am fully vaccinated and own nearly 50 masks, none I wear prouder than my color-coordinated New York Mets triple-layer with deodorized filter resting on cap attachments that allow it to be worn without pulling on my ears. Reality: I currently live in Los Angeles, where masks have recently been reinstated for all adults … Read more

Seeing Double? Ask Jim and Pam

Seeing Double? Ask Jim and Pam

In the wake of the Allen and Company meetings in Sun Valley, Idaho last week reports began to surface this week that the media ownership landscape is about to change even more dramatically.  Among the juicier ones was the revelation that two of the key mega-competitors, Comcast and ViacomCBS, are exploring ways to combine resources.  … Read more

I Need A Hero

I Need A Hero

I’ve already said on social media that my dad was my first hero. I’ve been blessed with being able to learn professionally from several prominent mentors who were my subsequent heroes–Barry Diller, Ted Turner, Haim Saban, Rupert Murdoch, Peter Liguori, Steve Mosko. You may have heard of a few of them.

My current hero is someone you’ve likely never heard of, unless you’re an astonishingly detailed fan of judo or mixed martial arts. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t.

Dr. Rhadi Ferguson is a four-time national judo champion, and competed in Athens on the 2004 Olympic team and was an alternate for the same team in Sydney in 2000. He is a proud and distinguished alumnus of Howard University, where he played football and also competed in wrestling and track, all while achieving a 4.0. He is an even prouder father to two wonderful children, his son Rufus and his daughter Rhadi Isabelle. But that’s his biography. I’ve been privelaged enough to know the man behind the biography, and my life has been forever changed for the better.

Dr. Ferguson was the mentor to an incredibly influential and impossibly beautiful person who entered my life last year. One of the greatest gifts she gave me was the chance to read a personally autographed copy of his book, “Coffee with Rhadi”. In fairness, there’s not a lot that Rhadi says or writes that is particularly unique, but the way he conveys it is compellingly unique, a combination of tough love, world class determination and perpetual hope. His is brilliant, patient, loving and can most definitely kick anyone’s ass if one happens to disagree.

I began receiving coaching from Dr. Ferguson and his partner, Arlo Henderson (himself an ex-NFL quarterback and a very successful agent), several months ago. My initial attraction was curiosity–who was it that was able to help mold the essence of a person I had such deep feelings for? Once I began to experience their one-on-one mentoring, encouragement and championship demeanors the essence of me began to change for the better.

As I write this I am at my lowest weight in my adult life, I attack each day with the ferocity of a champion and I have begun to understand that for as successful as speaking Leblanguage has been in my life the embellishment of his language–available through Team SwitchOn–has dramatically improved the impact of its communication. He has mentored hundreds of other champions besides the amazing person I respectfully and delicately reference, and I am proud to say I am on his client roster right now.

Maybe calling someone a hero puts them on a pedestal, and many heroes are reluctant. I’ve never asked him how he feels about that. This essay does just that. Doc, you are my hero now. Deal with it.

Until next time…

I Stream, You Stream?

I Stream, You Stream?

This week the 2021 Emmy Award nominations were announced, and if anybody had any questions that broadcast television–indeed, linear television, had crossed the threshold into irrelevance one only look at the breakdown of which networks–er, platforms–led the way. Of the 530 major nominations announced the other morning, more than 80% of them were from series running on services uniquely … Read more

Lies, Damn Lies and Rebounds

Lies, Damn Lies and Rebounds

The NBA Finals are here, traditionally a signpost  of where TV sports popularity stands.  Depending upon where the spin is coming from, this year’s numbers so far are either encouraging, devastating or inconclusive. From the positive side, viewership through the first two games was up approximately +18% vs. last year’s finals.  From the negative side, … Read more

My Second Mother

My Second Mother

My mother died again. Let me explain.  I lost my own mother far too prematurely, 30 years ago this June.  Look no further than her psyche for the cause of death.  My mother was well-intentioned but self-loathing, addicted to food, high-tar cigarettes and a codependent relationship with my equally well-intentioned but otherwise flawed father.  She … Read more

HULU:  Who Knew?

HULU:  Who Knew?

HULU:  WHO KNEW? As the streaming service war of attrition begins to ramp up with the recent moves surrounding the now-Warner Discovery brands (HBO Max and Discovery Plus) and Amazon (MGM)’s arms race for content, there is increasing ambiguity and uncertainty among one of the more mature players in the space, Hulu. At first blush … Read more

Tales of Nielsen and Blutarsky

Tales of Nielsen and Blutarsky

One of the most laugh-out loud scenes of Animal House is when Dean Wormer hands out grades to students and Bluto Blutarsky proudly revels in his “zero point zero” GPA.  On more than a few occasions last year many shows on the CW and on dozens of cable networks got the exact same overnight rating … Read more

Leblang Across America: The Recap – Leg One

Leblang Across America: The Recap – Leg One

Those of you who follow my social media know I’ve recently started to “break out of my COVID isolation” by getting out and about and having new experiences, which are all the more special to me given what I’ve survived in the past 18 months.  The necessity of condensing everything to cute photos, ambiguous captions … Read more

The Instant Gratification Network

The Instant Gratification Network

This week’s media bombshell was clearly Amazon swallowing MGM—for perspective, the price was roughly two-thirds of what they paid for Whole Foods, meaning an iconic Hollywood brand is inferior to organic cranberry tuna salad.  There’s a lot already written about how once again an arrogant tech company wants to impose its size and will on … Read more
