It’s Election Day 2024 at last, and I’m both mentally and physically exhausted. I typically get this way whenever Daylight Savings Time ends and my typically atypical sleep patterns get even more out of whack. I’m now purposefully setting whatever I might hope to be watching to tape knowing full well the odds of my staying awake even in early evening aren’t great. But this year, more than ever, I’m zombie-ing my way through my errands and work.
To say that even trying to follow a cycle as unprecedentedly, well, weird, as this one has been a grind has been an understatement. There seems to be no opinion that anyone can express that isn’t at least somewhat polarizing, and in my case anything that doesn’t reflect pure capitulation seems to evoke snark and ire from my more impassioned friends, followers, and one particular “fan” who I believe resides in Israel that seems to be Benjamin Netanhyahu’s agent.
If there’s one saving grace from my perpetual exhaustion it’s that there’s an exceptionally strong chance virtually nothing will be decided by midnight tonight, especially in California. Especially the races that matter the most to me–the ones that involve propositions and funding that directly affect me, and ones where my actual vote matters. Unlike, of course, the one that’s dominating the headlines and rhetoric that has been set up in a way where whatever I decided to do is completely inconsequential.
But I at least did send my vote in ahead of time, if for no other reason I wanted to avoid what’s transpiring today. FORBES’ Conor Murray set it all up in his post from last night:
Some polling places and vote tabulation centers, particularly in battleground states, are adopting unprecedented security measures—including snipers, bulletproof glass and “panic buttons”—as election workers brace for potential unrest, fearing an election denial movement that has reportedly grown more organized since the last presidential election.
In Maricopa County, Arizona, a county in a critical swing state central to former President Donald Trump’s false claim that the 2020 election was stolen, officials are protecting the vote tabulation center with snipers on the roof and drones surveilling the premises, while all entrants to the building will be subject to metal detectors.
Election officials in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, which is already the target of conspiracy theories from election deniers, have installed bulletproof glass in the elections bureau office and told the Associated Press they’ve spent nearly half their time working on election security ahead of the election.
Some counties, including Cobb County, Georgia, held hours-long training sessions with elections workers and law enforcement focused on how to keep themselves safe during the election. Cobb County also spent nearly $50,000 on “panic buttons” for election workers to quickly contact law enforcement in emergencies, which can be worn on lanyards or placed in pockets.
Some states also increased law enforcement presence, with Washington state, Oregon and Nevada activating the National Guard, the former two because of the ballot boxes set on fire last week.
And no less than a quintet of ABC News staffers–Alexandra Hutzler, David Brennan, Meredith Deliso, Julia Reinstein, and Lucien Bruggeman–are working extra hard to provide live updates throughout today. In the 7 AM PT hour alone , we saw these timeline entries:

Reportedly, about 80 million of us have already taken advantage of early voting options, so for you this plea can be ignored. But if you’re part of the majority who either believe in the “sanctity” of the same-day vote or resemble the shopping tactics of someone who avoids malls until Christmas Eve, this is for you.
I don’t care who you believe should be running this country, or why. And I care even less about any concerns you may have about being met with the kind of scenes and scenarios outlined above.
I don’t care what value you put on “democracy”.
I don’t care if you merely believe if your life depends upon the outcome, or if you actually fall into the sector facing potential abortion or deportation where it actually night.
I don’t care if it’s raining or if the winds are kicking up.
There is absolutely no freaking excuse for you to not vote. The FBI didn’t tell you not to, and I certainly won’t.
There are more than enough ways for you to get to a polling place today. If you live in the area, I’ll take you for free. And I know I’m not alone with that magnaminous offer.
More than ever, tomorrow is not a guarantee.
So do you damn civic duty today. Cast your vote.
Until next time (assuming there is one)….
