Was Any Line REALLY Crossed Besides The Sideline?

Dianne Russini has been a celebrated and respected reporter for such notable outlets as WNBC-TV, WRC-TV, ESPN and most recently THE ATHLETIC for the better part of the last two decades.  When she transitioned to the digital realm she was reportedly given a substantial increase in salary and a prominent role in their podcasting universe as the host of a buzzy football-centric show called SCOOP CITY.  She was a frequent guest on the endless array of sports gossip shows ranging from GET UP! to Ryen Russillo’s bro-centric podcasts, particularly during football season.  She frequently broke stories and offered unashamed takes on everything going on behind the scenes to obsessed audiences and passionate fan bases.  She’s even won a few awards along the way.

And yeah, she also happens to be yurt another hot Italian woman with Jersey roots over 40 proven talent that doesn’t mind showing off an amazing body–in her case, even after the compromise of two childbirths.  I don’t apologize for wanting to see her in a video podcast on a summer day from a broiling training camp than, say, Adam Schecter.  And I don’t see him or his now-colleague Ian Rapaport desiring to rock a crop top any time soon. either.

So I’m both amused and downright ticked off that so many judgmental people have made her the center of their attention when it was revealed this week that she has apparently been, shall we say, more than a tad close with one of the game’s fastest-rising coaching success stories.  It’s a juicy enough story for US’ to drop this scuttlebutt on her site:

Russini is making headlines for photos with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Page Six published photos of Vrabel looking cozy with Russini while on an apparent vacation in March 2026. Vrabel and Russini appeared to be holding hands and hugging at a hotel in Arizona in the images, which have since gone viral. Other photos showed the duo hanging out together at a pool and enjoying time at the resort’s spa.

Initially, as SPORTS ILLUSTRATED’s Eva Geitheim reported yesterday, that was an acceptable enough explanation to warrant support from her immediate supervisor, ATHLETIC executive editor Steven Ginsberg:
“These photos are misleading and lack essential context,” Ginsberg said. “These were public interactions in front of many people. Dianna is a premier journalist covering the NFL and we’re proud to have her at The Athletic.”
But NEWSWEEK’s Megan Armstrong was simultaneously reporting that Ginsberg’s superiors were taking a far less understanding view:
Page Six reported that The New York Times, which platforms The Athletic, has sidelined Russini while the publication investigates, including “reviewing her coverage.” An unnamed source told Page Six that The Athletic began an investigation after the outlet reached out to Russini for comment.  However, “new details” raised “additional concern” that prompted further review.
And already some of those “details” have found their way into the ever-curious depths of the internet, as FIRST CURIOSITY’s Ishan Misra revealed earlier this morning:
(H)ere’s the catch: who took those photos? They were clearly taken from a distance in order to avoid getting caught. Emmanuel Acho raised this question in the latest episode of Speakeasy. Here’s what nobody is talking about in regards to [Dianna] Russini and [Mike] Vrabel. Somebody hired a private investigator, and why is nobody discussing it??… That was not a fan who just happened to be wandering through Sedona, Arizona, and was like, “oh is that Mike Vrabel, and who’s that mystery woman?”…As the foremost expert on this topic, let’s just take the sting out. Beat them to the punchline.
Acho makes a good point, but he shouldn’t be the one to talk about the Vrabel-Russini scandal. Last year, Acho himself was in the news for something similar.  A report indicated that he had an inappropriate workplace relationship with his FOX Sports colleague, Joy Taylor. The network quickly removed them from their positions.
And regular readers of these musings already know of what went on with another prominent media couple, GMA3’s T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach, that paid the ultimate professional price for their wanderlust back in January 2023.  The Holmes situation was further complicated because of his own history.  But I made it clear then, and I reiterate now, how at least I feel about these sorts of “protective policies” that at the moment has pushed Russini both into the spotlight and from the gridiron sideline to the professional equivalent:
I…won’t defend, any incident of harassment that he may have inflicted.  This is strictly about two people, both clearly in relationships they were less than satisfied with, who worked together…and, yes, they fell in love.
I’ve personally seen it happen time and time again.  I recently worked at a company where at least five marriages resulted from co-workers, sometimes even in the same exact department, falling in love.  Two recently gave birth to absolutely gorgeous children, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen happier smiles on any of the parents in all the time I knew them.  Indeed, Iger met his current wife Willow while she was working for Good Morning, America.  I personally know several other ABC employees of his era who were going through divorces and married women who worked at the company.
Yes, both Vrabel and Russini are married; Vrabel since 1999; Russini since 2020.  Yes, both of them are parents.  Yes, both of them have spouses who might or might not have issues with all of this.  But then, that’s THEIR business, isn’t it?
We don’t know if the adjectives “happy” and/or “open” can be applied to either of those marriages.  If they are consenting adults–which these photos clearly indicate they are–then no crime is being committed.  And in this case, since they work and live in separate cities and both need to travel for business, there’s really no “toxic working environment” for any colleagues to actually be able to bitch about, is there?
And getting back to the “who took the pictures” and “who hired the private investigator” question– do note that it’s Page Six and TMZ that are knee-deep in this doo-doo.  Direct competitors of the NEW YORK TIMES.  Also brand extensions of FOX NEWS and THE NEW YORK/CALIFORNIA POST who are gleefully reporting on the unraveling of  top Golden State Democratic gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell’s campaign in the wake of reports of sexual assaults of a former staffer.  And also the recent employer of the leading Republican candidate, Steve Hilton.     Certainly merely a co-inky-dink, right?
Probably as much of a non-connection as there was to this other development which AWFUL ANNOUNCING’s Brendon Kleen reported on Friday:
The Athletic quietly stopped posting episodes of its Scoop City NFL podcast last month…Scoop City launched ahead of the 2024 season, partnering Russini with former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel as The Athletic began a targeted entry back into the podcast and digital video space. In the early months of the show’s run, an executive at The Athletic touted its success among women listeners…In a statement, Sebastian, Chief Commercial Officer and Chief Development Officer at The Athletic, confirmed the show has been in “transition” since the Super Bowl…A source confirmed to Awful Announcing that Daniel’s contract for the show had expired.
Could it merely be that some overly sensitive executives are merely anticipating backlash from the same sorts of mindsets that get wrapped up in THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW JERSEY as to whether or not one actual New Jersey housewife could be getting a little action from an athlete?   Maybe kinda wishing they could be similarly swept away to the warmth and luxury of Sedona in the midst of a God-ahwful wintah?
As long as Dianne Russini is showing up on time and prepared to do her job and her work is not materially losing audience or having a demonstrable effect on the balance of THE ATHLETIC, whom she decides to socialize with, let alone shtup, should matter to no one.   For those that somehow feel otherwise, I address them in the same manner my bestie offers me  to go down when I face similar summary judgements:
Jealous much?
Until next time…
